John. P. Martin All-Star Base Ball, Muzzy Field (English-Español, Photos)
The John P. Martin All-Star Series took place in Muzzy Field, Bristol, CT, and pitted two teams playing baseball with rules, equipment and outfits of the 19th Century. Three games were played, recreating 1858, 1864 and 1865 base ball, and you could see the energy of the players, and how much they care about the history of the game and having fun while playing.
From honoring their late friend Paul Salomons with the Ed Elmore Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Baseball Studies, to picking who got to hit first by using a bat and having one of the captains throw it out of the hand of the other (a practice that I remember from my teenage times in 1990s Cuba), to an old version of velocipedia, it was a nice day to remember. If you love baseball, joining these teams in ball fields or lots and seeing them play the old game is a must.
Team Daniel and Team Lucius gave a show for the ages. These All-Stars are part of a traveling league, in which players’ uniforms follow the patterns and designs of mid-19th Century Baseball, the single umpire roves around home plate and doesn’t call strikes and balls, a one-hopper catch is an out (players wear no gloves), and the pitcher moves around the pitching area (no mound rules) throwing the ball underhand.
I felt tempted to photograph the games (the first game and part of the second) in Black and White but the colors were so beautiful that it felt like a crime to do so.
To make things even better, the ballpark was built in 1914 and Babe Ruth played there.

La Serie de Estrellas John P. Martin tuvo lugar en el Muzzy Field de Bristol, CT, y enfrentó a dos equipos que jugaban al béisbol con reglas, equipos y trajes del siglo XIX. Se efectuaron tres partidos, recreando el base ball de 1858, 1864 y 1865, y se pudo ver la energía de los jugadores, y lo mucho que les importa la historia del deporte y divertirse mientras juegan.
Desde honrar a su difunto amigo Paul Salomons con el premio Ed Elmore Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Baseball Studies, hasta elegir quién tenía que batear primero usando un bate y haciendo que uno de los capitanes lo arrancara de la mano del otro (una práctica que recuerdo de mis tiempos de adolescente en la Cuba de los 90), hasta una vieja versión de la velocipedia, fue un bonito día para recordar. Si te gusta el béisbol, unirte a estos equipos en los campos de béisbol o en los solares y verlos jugar al viejo juego es una obligación.
El Team Daniel y el Team Lucius ofrecieron un espectáculo para recordar. Estos All-Stars forman parte de una liga itinerante en la que los uniformes de los jugadores siguen los patrones y diseños del béisbol de mediados del siglo XIX, el único árbitro se desplaza alrededor del home plate y no canta strikes ni bolas, una captura de primer rebote es un out (los jugadores no llevan guantes) y el lanzador se mueve por la zona de pitcheo (no hay montículo reglamentado) lanzando la pelota por debajo del brazo.
Tuve la tentación de fotografiar los partidos (el primero y parte del segundo) en blanco y negro, pero los colores eran tan hermosos que me pareció un crimen hacerlo.
Para hacer mejor las cosas, Muzzy Field se construyó en 1914 y Babe Ruth jugó allí.
